Marietta Open Marietta, Ohio
The Generals Track & Field teams opened up 2006 at Marietta. The meet was highlighted by 21 top three performances...including 11 first place finishes, and two school records.
Men's Recap: Six first places finishes kicked off the season for W&L. Freshmen Vance Berry was first among D3 runners (3rd overall) in the 800m running 2:02.62. Sophomore Marshall French ran 53.91 in the 400 to place first (D3), and freshmen Robbie Varipapa crossed the line in the 500m in 1:12.37 (1st D3). Sophomore Alex Mahoney also finished first in the 1,000m, with freshmen Alex Jackson right behind him in 2nd. Freshmen Drew Martin cleared 13'6" in the pole vault to place 1st among D3 jumpers. In the relays the Generals ran three DMRs, with the team of Steve Rivoir, Matt Harrison, Anthony Ives and Vance Berry crossing the line 1st (D3) in 10:59.83. The 4x400m team of Will Holliday, Chip McCoy, Wilson Robinson and Marshall French ran 3:39.11 to also finish 1st among D3 teams. To round things off the high jump duo of Peter Martinez and Ryan Edge both cleared 6'0" to finish 2nd and 3rd.
Women's Recap: Freshmen Jackie Burns led the charge for the women winning and running away from the field in the 1,000m as she ran 3:19.22. In her first ever meet, fellow classmate Elizabeth Webb was the 1st D3 finisher (3rd overall) in the 800m crossing the line in 2:29.47. Freshmen Becca Taylor in her home state also finished first among D3 runners in the mile (5:37.00). Rounding out first place finishes was the 4x400m relay. Caroline Davis, Stephanie Stelter, Tara Hildenbrand and Stacy Doornbos broke their own school record finishing first (D3) and 2nd overall running 4:16.25.
Bringing home second place finishes among D3 participants was freshmen Stacy Doornbos in the 55m. Breaking her own school record running 7.56. Doornbos was also 2nd in the long jump (4.90m). Junior Sara Behmerwohld was second in the 300m running 46.80. freshmen Caroline Davis ran 9.68 in the 55 hurdles (2nd) and 65.12 (3rd) in the 400m. Classmate Alysen Kuck cleared 5' 0" in the high jump while sophomore Liz Brandler cleared 10'0" in the Pole Vault to also finish 2nd.
